ImpactDAOs

Definition

An ImpactDAO is a decentralized autonomous organization whose externalities are net-positive — a DAO that, by its operation, generates more good for the world than it extracts. Articulated by Ale Borda and Kevin Owocki in their book ImpactDAOs, they are described as “the foundational atomic building block of an emergent, regenerative, peer-to-peer, pluralistic, civilizational-scale infrastructure for funding public-goods.” They are the atomic unit of a new public-goods funding infrastructure.

The Atomic Building Block

If a public-goods economy is to exist at civilizational scale, it needs a repeatable, composable unit from which larger structures can be assembled. ImpactDAOs are that unit: self-governed organizations that coordinate resources and labor toward regenerative outcomes, interoperable with one another and capable of nesting into peer impact networks. Their value is measured not by profit extracted but by positive externalities produced.

Out-Competing the Incumbent System

For a purpose-oriented economic paradigm to emerge, it cannot merely be morally preferable — it must out-compete the existing win-lose system in efficiency, cost, and accessibility. Borda and the community of builders she convenes pursue this through peer impact networks, shared knowledge and best practices, and new funding mechanisms (such as quadratic-funding) that up-regulate for collaboration, all-win competition, and synergy rather than zero-sum rivalry.

Toward a Purpose Economy

ImpactDAOs may signal the earliest stages of an economic paradigm in which all individuals can participate in meaningful, self-governed, purpose-oriented, positive-sum collaboration for the benefit of all Life. A commons-based, interoperable approach to social impact — emphasizing inter-organizational synergy and field-building — treats impact not as the byproduct of charity but as the organizing logic of the economy itself.

In Benjamin’s Work

Benjamin explores ImpactDAOs and the purpose economy in conversation with Ale Borda in impactdaos-and-the-purpose-economy, situating them within his broader vision of post-zero-sum systems. The thread continues in his thinking on regenerative capital in post-capitalist-venture-capital-thesis and upward-spiral-economics.
