Eight Forms of Capital
The Eight Forms of Capital is the foundational ontology of the regenerative economics field, contributed by Gregory Landua and Ethan Roland. It recognizes financial capital as one currency among eight: financial, social, material, living, intellectual, experiential, spiritual, and cultural. It makes visible the truth every community member knows and every balance sheet refutes — most of the value produced in an economy never touches a bank.
Landua carried the ontology into infrastructure by co-founding Regen Network, so that ecological state (soil carbon, biodiversity, watershed health) could be recorded and credited on a public ledger and regeneration could become something an economy accounts for rather than merely aspires to. Ferananda Ibarra, through the MetaCurrency and Holochain projects, extended plural accounting into asset-backed currencies on the thesis that value flows made visible (current-see) become self-regulating through adaptive response.
In bioregional economics, multi-capital accounting is not a moral gesture bolted onto conventional accounts but the enabling infrastructure of the fourth pillar, holistic wellbeing as the economy’s measure: what the double-entry ledger was to merchant capitalism, multi-capital accounting will be to the bioregional economy. It keeps the feedback loop between economic activity and the health of the household short enough to steer by.
